#6: What's Getting in Your Way?

Jul 16, 2018 6:56:38 AM / by Chris Heinz

The Bible says, “Be strong in the LORD and in his mighty power.” (Eph 6:10)

If something’s worth doing, something else is going to jump in your way. Expect it. It’s rare that anything of value comes without a fight. You might say that salvation and grace come freely, but that’s not true. Do you know what Jesus went through to offer you new life?

Only after overcoming every temptation common to man, only after giving himself up to torture and death, and only after defeating death itself, was Jesus able to redeem your life. That sounds like quite a fight to me. If something’s worth doing, something else is going to jump in your way.

Which is why we struggle with prayer.

When you consider the rewards of prayer, which we mentioned last time—closeness with the Father, confidence in God’s Will, and Christlikeness—it’s not surprising that something else is going to jump in your way. The riches are too great for thieves not to interfere.

So, what are your thieves? This week we consider what’s in your way when it comes to the prayer life you want to have. We ask the “obstacles” question.

As you know, we’re on this prayer coaching series together. If you’ve been tracking with us, you’ve taken an honest look at your current prayer life (the “present” question), and you’ve thought about the prayer life you want to have (the “future” question).

Now we ask the “obstacles” question, which identifies the barriers in front of you. What is blocking your way? What is gritting its teeth and planting its feet and bidding you to back down? What is holding you back? You cannot move ahead until you see what's in your way.

The Bible says, “Be strong in the LORD and in his mighty power.”

So disrupt the cycle! Shine the light, sound the alarm, send out the hounds. Take back the situation, uphold the coming future, vindicate the better day. Asking the obstacles question bridges the gap between the present and the future—Where are you now? Where do you want to go? What's in your way?

When you’re not rushed or distracted, explore the following questions about your prayer life. Write out your answers in a journal or on this worksheet.

As you do, let the Holy Spirit coach you to pray.

 Download the worksheet

What is getting in the way of the prayer life you want to have?

How are your behaviors holding you back?

How are your thoughts and beliefs holding you back?

How are your past experiences holding you back?

How are other people holding you back?

What else is holding you back?

What might God say to you right now?

I’ll tell you, if something’s worth doing, something else is going to jump in your way, and it’s rare that anything of value comes without a fight. But Jesus was victorious and through him, you can be too. Your thieves don’t get the final say.

“Be strong in the LORD and in his mighty power.”
