New folks have joined our journey, so let’s get you up to speed. We’re in this prayer coaching series in which we’re asking ourselves questions about our prayer life. We’re trying to understand four areas: our current situation, our ideal future, the obstacles in our way, and a plan to get there.
Some people resist this approach because it sounds too methodical or mechanical to apply to prayer. Prayer is too mystical, relational or organic to turn such questions toward. Prayer “just happens” and you can’t plan it, improve it, or analyze it. “Prayer just is.”
Some people see it this way, but I don’t. Which is why we’re on this prayer coaching series together. Prayer is one of the best things we’ve got, but unfortunately it can be one of the most frustrating.
It’s like this one time when I had just applied sunscreen before I went outside, and I turned the door knob to go outside to where the sun was. But my hand kept slipping around the door knob and I couldn’t get a grip.
I could see the sun, but I couldn’t get to it. Man, that was frustrating!
Prayer can be this way. We want to go to where the Son is, we might even be able to see him, we just can’t get there. But through the cross, the Son already removed every barrier between us and God. The hard work was already done! And because the hard work was already done, let us do a little work on our prayer lives so we can see the Son even clearer.
So, if you’ve been tracking with us, you’ve taken an honest look at your current prayer life (the “present” question), and you’ve thought about the prayer life you want to have (the “future” question). You’ve identified the barriers in front of you (the “obstacles” question).
Now we ask the “planning and support” question. In looking at all you’ve considered in this series, and perhaps your responses on worksheets one, two, and three, what does a plan look like moving forward? That’s what this week is about.
As you consider your plan, you’re keeping in mind what came before—your current situation, your “dream” prayer life, and obstacles. And now you ask, “In light of all that, what now?” There may be sunscreen greasing your grip, but you want to get outside. How will you get to the Son through prayer?
Here are some questions to consider. As you do, let the Holy Spirit coach you to pray.
What action steps will you take?
When will you do them?
Who can support you as you move forward?
How will you know when you’ve had victory?
What may get in the way?
What might God say to you right now?
Remember, the Son already removed every barrier between us and God. The hard work was already done! And because the hard work was already done, let us do a little work on our prayer lives so we can see the Son even clearer.
He will be the great reward!
